Elementary School Academics

Elementary School at Charlottesville Catholic School encompasses kindergarten through fifth grades. These grades primarily are self-contained classrooms in grades K-4. Teachers are allowed the flexibility of team teaching in instruction of the core subjects. The academic subjects of art, music, Spanish, physical education and technology are instructed by specialized teachers. Fifth grade is considered a "transition to middle school year" and team teaching is offered in some core subjects as preparation for the middle school experience.

Teachers use the Diocese of Richmond's approved Consensus Curriculum to develop their individual class' curriculum. Learning objectives for each grade level are then carefully developed within the guidance provided by the Consensus Curriculum (see curriculum page for more details). This process provides teachers flexibility in developing a learning program geared to the ability levels of their students in a given year. Terra Nova standardized test scores indicates this is a successful approach to curriculum development and implementation.
